Meet Paul Angelini

The owner of the James Pharmacy Bed and Breakfast knows good food. The Angelini family have proudly farmed land in the picturesque region of Marche in Italy for three generations. Today, their wines are offered under the Angelini Wines and Estates label. Paul’s knowledge of and love for quality eating is strong. If you ask Paul what sets a good restaurant apart, his answer is clear: “It is the quality of the raw materials the chef buys, the balance of flavors, the presentation on the plate, and the authenticity of the food. For some restaurants, the atmosphere also plays an important role.” Here, Paul shares some local favorites that he wants you to try on your next stay at the James.

Grano Arso

Judged Best Restaurant Overall in CT by The Connecticut Restaurant Association in Dec. 2019, Grano Arso is in nearby picturesque Chester. Grano locally source, grind their own grains, and make their own pasta and bread. The public is enthusiastic. Paul concurs: “The quality of the raw materials shows up on the plate. A good balance of flavors.”

Otto’s

Pizza? How does a pizza place make it on this list?

By crafting pizzas that are wood-fired and made with the best of ingredients. “There is a balance of flavors” Paul says. “Some places overdo one ingredient like mozzarella and you feel bloated afterwards.” One secret of their excellent Tiramisu? There is no liquor of any kind in it. Sorry, Rum lovers.

Turns out adding spirits is an American thing, not an Italian thing. But don’t worry; you won’t miss it.

Fresh Salt

Located at the Saybrook Point Resort and Marina, this is a restaurant that captures the Connecticut summer shoreline experience. Paul: “Quality ingredients. They serve good drinks. And the atmosphere is second to none.”

Sip

As a wine distributor, Paul knows a thing or two about wine. Sip is not a restaurant, but a true wine bar. “A super selection of good wines that are representative of their country of origin.” Sip allows guests to try high-quality wines from all around the world. Wine tastings are available along with charcuterie. “It’s a great place for appetizers or a quiet afternoon drink with a friend.”

Penny Lane Pub

Sometimes you just want a great burger. This local neighborhood pub has been in business for decades. Paul says Penny Lane is “a great local hangout to have fun with good quality food and a good bar.”
