(above) The Stonington Harbor Light was built in 1840. It now serves as a local history museum.

The densely built Borough of Stonington occupies a point of land that projects into Little Narragansett Bay. Its colonial, Federal, and Greek revival architectures have been preserved through the lack of modern industry, together with the borough's role as a fashionable summer residence. The grander houses on Main Street originally belonged to bankers, shipowners, and prosperous merchants. Stonington is home to Connecticut’s only active fishing fleet. A glance over the stony walls that give the place its name will reveal spectacular water views at every turn. It is a thoroughly unselfconscious seaside town.
